Our Work Process
How we approach each project
Hardwood Floor Install Process
At Fuentes Flooring Inc., consistent quality is important. We want customers to be completely satisfied with their hardwood floor job. Thanks to years of experience, we’ve developed an installation process that guarantees a beautiful hardwood floor each and every time.
Preparing for Installation
We start by measuring the space and making sure to have enough flooring materials to cover the area. We recommended to purchase extra flooring to account for cuts and any mistakes that may occur during the installation process.
Before installation, it is important to acclimate the hardwood flooring in the room where it will be installed. This allows the flooring to adjust to the temperature and humidity of the space, reducing the risk of warping or shrinking later on.
Subfloor Preparation
We make sure that the subfloor is clean, dry, and level before installing the hardwood flooring. We remove any debris or dust from the subfloor and repair any uneven areas or damage. If necessary, we use a moisture barrier or underlayment to protect the hardwood flooring from moisture and provide additional sound insulation.
Using Underlayment
Underlayment is a crucial component of hardwood flooring installation. It provides additional moisture protection, sound insulation, and helps to even out slight imperfections in the subfloor. We lay down a high-quality underlayment material, following the manufacturer’s instructions, to create a stable and comfortable base for your hardwood floors.
Engineered Wood Flooring
When it comes to installing engineered wood flooring, the glue-down install method is a reliable and durable option. This method involves securing the flooring to the subfloor with adhesive, providing a strong bond that ensures the longevity of your hardwood floors.
Solid Wood Flooring
The nail-down install method is a popular choice for installing solid wood flooring on a wooden subfloor. This method provides a permanent and traditional installation that enhances the durability and beauty of your hardwood floors.
Sanding and Refinishing Process
Fuentes Flooring Inc. consistently provides homeowners with expert sanding and refinishing of their hardwood floors. Most of the sanding work will take a minimum of three days. More time may be needed if a homeowner's flooring also requires finishing. The stain used will also determine the time it will take to finish. Stains that are pastel or dark colored will take extra time to dry.
Stain Colors
As soon as we have sanded some of your floor, we will show you stain colors. For desired results, we always recommend that homeowners have a picture of flooring they like so we can determine what color shade might be best. Having an approximate shade in mind will also help us narrow down the color choices to select the right one for you.
Sanding
We begin the sanding process using a belt sander at the middle of the floor, a circular sander for the edges of the floor and hand scrapers for the corners. The final step is finer sanding using a buffer with a screen. To achieve the desired results for your floor, we use various grits of sandpaper. It all depends on the type of wood and finish of the floor. For example, on a red oak floor, we start with 36 grit sandpaper, moving to finer grits until we reach 100 for the last sand. With this process, the goal is to completely remove the old finish and flatten the floor.
Scraping and Screening
The final step is scraping, which is done before the finish is applied. We do this process by hand using a very sharp paint scraper to plane the wood along the edges and corners of the floor. Once scraping is finished, screening is performed with a buffer. This has a 100, 120, or 150 grit screen and works like a drywall sanding screen. The buffer smooths the floor, blending the surface evenly. The process is repeated after every coat of finish.
Staining and Coating
(Duraseal Stains and Masterline oil based polyurethane) Stain is an oil-based liquid that seals and gives color to your new hardwood flooring. When we apply stain, we utilize a trim brush around the edges and use a cotton cloth along the rest of the floor. After an application, excess stain is wiped off. Then we apply the 2 coats of oil-based polyurethane with a good quality fine roller. In between finish coats we use the screening process.
